Junior Kadooment  - Kensington Oval

RESULTS:  Prices take top award at Junior Kadooment- The husband and wife team of Sanka and Sonia Price took the top award at this year’s Junior Kadooment in association with Consolidated Finance, held earlier today at the historic Kensington Oval.

The Prices copped the Robert Weekes Award for Best Festival Designer for their presentation entitled Celebrating the Arts – Barbados future through the Orange Economy.

It is the third year they have paraded under Blackbird Productions, and an elated Sanka said he was proud of his partner.

The band had about 160 revellers in four sections and focused on the orange economy.

“This is the creative economy and showing how it could be the future lifeblood for Barbados because we are talking musical arts, we are talking creative arts, literary arts, visual arts,” he explained.

The Prices also won the Tropical section and were second in the Historical behind Springer Memorial School’s Goodly Heritage, presented by designers Alicia Moore and Patricia Bourne-Nurse.

MQI/98.1 - The One Soca Monarch - National Botanical Gardens, Waterford, St Michael

RESULTS : Mikey is Barbados’ first ever Soca Monarch.

Performing last at the MQI 98.1 The One Soca Monarch Finals at the National Botanical Gardens, Mikey, last year’s Party Monarch, scored 98 points with 'Action Time Again' to take the top prize of $20 000 and a BT 50 Mazda valued at $115 000.

He was one of only two people who performed a party song at the finals and brought the crowd alive, getting them to move their umbrellas up and down and side to side as the rain came down.

The result seemed to be well-received as shouts of approval echoed across Waterford.

Six-time Party Monarch and last year’s Sweet Soca king Lil Rick was second with 75 points. He performed the second power soca song, Jam Down, in a competition that was dominated by sweet soca. It was energetic and featured The Mighty Grynner. He went home with $30,000.

Lead Pipe was third, just one point behind Lil Rick. He performed the popular 'Sometime', and was the first artiste to really move the crowd. There were murmurs of discontent when his placing was announced by emcee Jamarr Browne, but his night's work earned $20 000.

Only the top three positions were announced. The other competitors were Marzville, Betty B, TC, Jamal Slocombe, Sanctuary, Jus D, Biggie Irie, Adrian Clarke, Faith, Marvay, Nathalee, Skung Yung and Shaquille. (SAT)

The popular 'Sometime' earned 73 per cent of the 7 000 votes compared to 27 per cent for Hypasounds’ Fair Sa.

“I could scream now?” an excited Leadpipe asked Big Red The DJ who made the announcement during his The Big Link Show.

He placed third at Sunday’s MQI 98.1 The One Soca Monarch Competition at the National Botanical Gardens, a decision which did not go down well with many in the audience.

The win carried a top prize of $15 000.

Revellers takeover streets for Foreday Morning Ja

Katrina King Published on

August 3, 2019

The Barbados Light and Power (BL&P) Foreday Morning Jam got underway in the wee hours of Saturday morning as hundreds of revellers left the starting points at Queen’s Park, the Helipad in Bridgetown and the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation (BIDC) car park.

At approximately 1:15 a.m., the bands departed from Queen’s Park, Constitution Road, St Michael.

The fervor and excitement was in the air as music trucks started to blast some of the Crop Over season’s biggest tunes

The glee and euphoria of playing mas was reflected not only in the j’ouvert revellers but also the bystanders who lined the streets to get a glimpse of the action. Some even jumped in to join the festivities.

Up until after 6 a.m., the road was filled with dancing, revelry, paint and the sweet sounds of soca from Barbados and the rest of the Caribbean.

With 22 bands making their way to the Mighty Grynner Highway, there was noticeably a bigger turnout in comparison to last year.

The harshness of the economic times was evident based on the costumes. Also seen was  tightened security and large police presence, which ensured that everything went smoothly.

Kam Boyce was also enjoying the festivities but noted that the attendance has declined.

“Foreday is great as usual, but it is less crowded than I know of. I don’t see any violence, I don’t see any negativity, I just see a lot of positivity,” he said, adding

The Foreday Morning Jam has faced competition with the increase of private jumps such as Native and Caesar’s Army, and Foreday bands such as Mix Nutz, Spekturm, Muddsylde and Envy Mas Band branching off from the jump to host their own events on the night.

Unfortunately, this year there will be no Stag Jam Tune Competition, to recognize the most played tracks on the road, due to lack of sponsorship. (KK)
